Dr. Sanduk Ruit has given eye sight back to thousands of cataract patients all over the world. He was the first doctor in Nepal to use low-cost intraocular lenses and devised an international standard IOL in 1995. This standard has brought the cost per lens down from USD 100 to about USD 5. They are produced in Nepal and used all over the world. Apart from training doctors in many developing countries to use his small-incision cataract surgery technique that he developed for the use at community level, he runs a hospital that manages to treat all patients based on smart pricing strategies that cross-subsidize the treatment of poor patients.
